Why You Won’t Use Math When You Grow Up
Why You Won’t Use Math When You Grow Up
When will I use this math?
Says so many students
The question is often by students to admit that they have no interest in the subject. If so many adults do not “like math,” it’s easy to believe that it has no role in someone’s promotion, business success, or family drama. However, this can’t be the best question to ask. For your consideration:
When do I want to use this math?
Where is this math still relevant to society or the work place?
How can I make the most of learning this math material?

Math At Home
Math is a language rarely spoken, but often needed
We said that
You take a math class every year, but how often do you bring up the quadratic formula in conversations at home? When your mom is happy, does she speak in calculations or in a natural language like English or Spanish? Math is not supposed to be a language used only in a classroom. When you have to account for the money in your 529 plans or help family sort out the budget for the next quarter, you use calculations. Calculations are used in everyday scenarios, but you may not be privileged to be in those conversations.
Use It Or Lose It
This is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Approaching the topic despairingly rather than hopeful automatically sets a negative tone for the course and content. When a fear of numbers, symbols, and terms negatively impacts you, that is not normal. It is your responsibility to get rid of it, especially because if you do not, you may have to pay someone who is not afraid.
Math At High Levels
Know Your Numbers
Says people in high places
The saying is not lost on those in high places. There are opportunities to work in high-paying fields that expect higher than average exposure to mathematical concepts. These are not for the faint at heart, but neither is the money for the unmotivated. When people make decisions based on data and statistics, they are making mathematical considerations. However, being responsible for thousands of people is not the only reason for someone to use data. Personal budgeting relies on calculations to reduce debt and increase assets. Higher level positions use math as an expectation of the job.
Our Response
If I can’t trust you with math, I can’t trust you with money
Glad Academics
To respond, we created a unique mathematical curriculum, where you can explore math through the lens of various topics:
- Finance
- Creativity
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Logic
- Engineering
Particularly, our math + finance curriculum is used in schools to show where math is used as we explicitly address standards. This curriculum makes math engaging and applicable for even the unmotivated, while learning mathethematical basics. Let us know you are interested and we’ll invite you to our Summer events and finally have fun with this useful subject!
