Variables: A Brief Explanation
We make a point that variables can change. Variables may represent various values. So, we describe them as “change-ables.” On another level, we explain them as “change-ables” because variables may be exchanged for a value instead of a letter representation. This is true even in the context of coding, and others.
An Illustration
You: “Many times, an actor/ actress plays a character in a movie, show, etc. But, the character could have been played by the various people who auditioned for the role. When one person is chosen for the role, you see that one person in the role.”
Scholars: Tracks you (understanding the illustration so far)
You: “The character is like a variable. There could be various values assigned to the variable. Still, you must solve for the variable to see which value(s) the variable is representing.”
Scholars: (Insert victorious cry, such as, “I GET IT! YOU ARE MY FAVORITE TEACHER!” as the class claps in applause!)
Another Illustration
You: “Many times, an actor plays a character in a movie or show. But, the actor can play many characters. Once that actor plays the character, no one else plays the character in that movie or show in the same way. This is why we sometimes recognize the actor and do not remember their character’s names”
